NaVorro Bowman played the majority of the snaps and finished with a team-high 10 tackles on Sunday. But after agreeing to the trade, the 49ers learned that Bowman preferred to be a free agent and decide where he would play next. As a reward for his service, San Francisco acquiesced and released the linebacker.
The 49ers quickly shot that rumor down but Bowman wasn’t immune from hearing about it. He woke up to a litany of Twitter notifications from fans of other teams hoping he’d come to their favorite franchise, and from Niners fans letting him know they didn’t want him to go anywhere. Lynch quickly called Bowman to tell him it wasn’t true, and Shanahan said Tuesday that the only trade discussions the team had during the draft centered on tight end Vance McDonald.
Entering this season, Bowman made it clear that he feels stronger and ready to prove he has plenty of good football ahead of him. San Francisco medical personnel helped Bowman off the field and to the sideline, where he attempted to test the leg. After a few minutes, a cart brought Bowman to the locker room for further examinations.
After falling to the ground in obvious pain, Bowman immediately clutched at his left leg and ankle. Unless Bowman, a four-time All-Pro inside linebacker, can somehow fix what ails the Raiders’ purported high-powered offense with a struggling Derek Carr at the controls.
Count Shanahan among those who see a version of Bowman that looks healthier than one might expect at this point of his recovery. While the Niners are aiming to strike the cheap nfl jerseys balance between letting Bowman compete and making sure he doesn’t rush back too fast, Bowman is participating fully in organized team activities. He was in his usual starting middle linebacker spot on Tuesday.
In his time with the 49ers, Bowman became one of four players in franchise history to earn four first-team All-Pro nods, and finished his time in Santa Clara with 709 total tackles, 12.5 sacks, seven forced fumbles and four interceptions.
“The work ethic and all that and I think the other part that’s really pretty cool is the kind of tutoring of the younger players at that position,” Del Rio said of Bowman’s influence. “I mean, they’re just soaking it up. When do you lift? How often do you lift? When do you leave? When do you cover this?
The answer to that question came last week when Bowman was released after taking umbrage with a decrease in his playing time and asked for a trade. And with that, Foster will be asked to move a few feet inside from weakside linebacker to middle linebacker when he returns from a high ankle sprain. That return could happen as soon as Sunday against Dallas.
With Bowman leaving, Foster now has a prime opportunity to do more than just step into Bowman’s spot at middle linebacker. He also could step into his spot as one of the faces of the franchise, complete with a full-fledged leadership role.
The Raiders boast only the No. 25 run defense in the NFL. Bowman would help. The Raiders still have issues covering tight ends. Bowman could help diagnose the issue, even if he became a situational player this season for the Niners.
Before Bowman departed Sunday’s game, Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott had 11 carries for 53 yards with 30 yards before contact in about two and a half quarters. An average of nearly five yards per carry is not good for the Niners’ defense but at least Bowman had eight tackles and a sack and was around the ball on a consistent basis.
